Kashuu Kiyomitsu was smithed by Kiyomitsu the beggar of Kaga, as he was known due to living in a poorhouse in an area where the burakumin live in. In a poor environment like that, Kashuu called himself a "child of the riverbank", acknowledging his origin but never really talk about it.
At some point, Okita Souji obtained and keep Kashuu, despite his reputation as a difficult sword to wield. Instead, Okita successfully wielded Kashuu while serving in the Shinsengumi. Along the way, Yamatonokami Yasusada later came into his possession as another difficult sword to wield. As his beloved, tricky swords, both Kashuu and Yasusada get along with each other. As they're both uchigatana aka similiar sized swords, Okita alternates between which one of them he'll bring along.
By chance, Kashuu get chosen on the night of the Ikedaya Raid. And broke during it. At the same time, Okita's tuberculosis seems to act up or make its appearance...
After Ikedaya Raid, Kashuu was deemed irreparable and Okita's forced to left him behind.
All that lead to Kashuu developing an obsession with "being loved" and "looking cute".
Until eventually, he become one of many swords to get summoned by the Saniwa to help protect history. With a new master willing to use him, and for him to earn the love of, Kashuu works hard to follow orders. All while not talking about the past or Okita, because no one needs to hear. Nope.
